deGRAFENRIED COLLECTION
IN NEW
YORK AUCTION
While we were printing
this newspaper, Christi's in New York was auctioning off Gaines deGrafenried's
historic collection of guns and artifacts. Gaines is well known for
helping develop the Texas Ranger Museum and Texas Ranger Hall of Fame.
Christi's says 285 items are on the
auction block, worth an estimated $1.5 million to $2 million. Inquiries
have been coming in from all over the world. The interest comes from the
global allure of Texas and the Wild West. People Love Texas. It's
big.
Mr. deGrafenried grew up in Chilton,
Texas. During his retirement years he was the honorary curator of the
museum and helped assemble some of its original collection. He died in
1991. He lived at 26th and Washington.
His collection included a variety of
items, besides guns. He loved anything from the past. He often
called the citizen to come and take a picture of his latest "prize."
